Pemberton Borough, NJ
This was RYEBREAD’s first live/work project set in an historic context. According to the Client, we nailed it.
A combination single-family residence and headquarters for a successful catering company, it was a vanguard local example of successful small-scale mixed use. Via good design, it managed to simultaneously be a comfortable house, a venue for a productive business, and a good neighbor to the surrounding community.
On the exterior, this project appears as another traditional house on the street leading into the Borough of Pemberton, a quant Pinelands village. The style chosen was Craftsman, with battered columns, and a gracious wrap-around porch. It appropriately recalls the early 20th-Century architecture of rural South Jersey.
Live/work units are based on the traditional downtown living arrangement – shopkeepers operated their businesses on the lower levels of a building while living in apartments above. Current configurations, however, design the conflicts out of the two adjacent uses. Set in a neighborhood context, these structures present a more green, healthy, and economic development strategy that is now gaining in popularity around the country.
